Standard Wire Gauge (SWG)

Dear Readers,

Wish You a Happy May Day-2013

This article let us discuss about Gauge systems. This systems are used to represent the thickness of the wire or diameter of the wire. In Great Britain wire gage has been legalized. This is called the Standard Wire Gage (S.W.G.), formerly called Imperial Wire Gage.

Other main systems for measuring gauge are American Wire Gauge (AWG), Standard Wire Gauge (SWG) and Birmingham Wire Gauge (BWG). However AWG and SWG are widely used throughout the world. In general ferrous metals are using Standard Wire Gauge (SWG) and Non-ferrous metals (meaning those that do not contain iron) are using the American Wire Gauge (AWG).

Wire diameter is a premier factor in determining the wire. Different numbering systems are used, depending on the type of metal. Inch and millimetre dimensions are used for Standard Wire Gauge (SWG). No. 7/0 is the largest size (0.50 inch or 12.7 mm) in diameter, and No. 50 is the smallest( 0.001 inch or about 25 µm) in diameter. Overall as the gauge number decreases, the thickness of the wire increases. Wire gauge can refer to both electrical and mechanical.

Unit Weight of Crane Rails (Non Metric Standard)

Dear Readers,

This is continuation with my previous post of Standard Crane Rails. Now let us discuss about the non metric standard crane rails. This rail profile is same as standard crane rails but the dimensions and unit weights are differed from standard crane rails. It is also called as a Non Metric Standard Crane Rail and readily available in market.  It is easily identified with the suffix number. This suffix number is nearer to the unit weight rail. All dimensions are based on IS:3443. Based on the applications it may used.

Unit weight of Non Metric Standard Crane Rails are as follows.

When I first started writing, self never expected such a good response from readers. Really it gives me the sense of satisfaction about the blog performance. On 19th Dec 2011 blog page view crossed 1,00,000. Since then blog page view has been increased from 300 to 2100 per day. Now it has crossed 6,31,125. Hope by next birthday the total page view will be crossed one million. Thanks so much to everyone who reads this blog. I am more confident that you will be more than satisfied and use full to all engineers. Share this blog to your friends. Have a nice Day.
