Elliptical Hollow Section (EHS)

Dear Readers, Wish you a Happy Mayday.

In recent years Elliptical hollow sections (EHS) have emerged to the hot-finished product range for tubular construction.

It is relatively new shape of high strength and it is attracted significant attention from engineers and architects owing to their complementary qualities of aesthetic appearance and structural efficiency. The distinctive varying curvature around the section is not only aesthetically appealing but also offers differing flexural rigidities about the two principal axes and high torsional stiffness. This cross-section creates an interesting alternative for engineers and architects in a broad range of design applications. It is also called Ellipcon section. They come in two shapes

1. Ellipcon section (Is an Ellipse)
2. Semi Ellipcon section (Half of an ellipse / D-Shape)

Both shapes are given the structure very outstanding architectural looks and the section having much structural advantage as it is like hollow section. Some of the advantages are listed below
• These Ellipcon sections are good alternate to traditional sections and they have all structural properties similar to hot hollow sections
• EHS (Elliptical Hollow Section) have greater bending capacity than the CHS (Circular Hollow Section) of the same area / Weight

• For structures with limited space these new section might provide design solution and increasing the open floor area

• For Non-Symmetric load situations this section would be more cost effective

The Ellipcon sections have constant external dimension with in the same size only thickness is increasing. EHS are generally produced with major to minor outside dimensions of 2:1
It is designated as Width X Height X Thickness, Weight is measured Kg/meter. Unit Weight of both sections will be followed my next post

Unit Weight of Square Hollow-IS 4923

Dear Friends, In continuation with my earlier posts self would like to post unit weight of square hollow as per IS 4923 : 1997 standard. Available sizes are varies from 25 mm to 250mm and thickness varies from 2mm to 12mm. Readily available size in markets are up to 150mm

As per Indian Standard a hollow section shall be designated by its out side dimensions and thickness in millimeter and shall be further classified in to CF or HF depending upon whether it is Cold formed or Hot formed.

For Example hot formed square hollow section with outside dimensions 40mm and thickness 4mm shall be designated as 40 X 40 X 4 HF SHS

CF and HF means Cold Formed and Hot Formed.
SHS means Square Hollow Section and RHS means Rectangular Hollow Section

Hollow Steel Section (HSS)

A hollow structural section (HSS) or structural hollow sections (SHS) both are same. This is a type of metal profile with a hollow tubular cross section.

With high torsional rigidity and compressive strength, these hollow sections are comparably more efficient than conventional steel sections.

The excellent distribution of material around the axis of the square and rectangular steel hollow sections allows for remarkable strength qualities and thus offers decisive advantages in its applications.
Hollow steel sections (HSS) are commonly used in welded steel frames where members experience loading in multiple directions. HSS have very efficient shapes for this multiple-axis loading as they have uniform geometric and thus uniform strength characteristics along two or more cross-sectional axes; this makes them good choices for columns.
They have increased tensile capacity because of concentric connections and increased compressive strength because of higher radius of gyration. They possess full strength under bending moment due to superior torsional rigidity. Outer smooth profile ensures no trappings of dirt and water, thus reducing chances of corrosion reaction.

The HSS has superior resistance to lateral torsional buckling. They also have excellent resistance to torsion.

A higher strength to weight ratio credits these sections with nearly 20% reduction in the use of steel. HSS is commonly available in mild steel.
These sections allow for a wide range of applications as industrial sheds and exhibition stalls to space frames and sign supporting structures. The sections can also be utilised for large span portal frames, amusement parks and playground equipments, guard rails for staircases, sports galleries, pedestrian walkovers, bridges and bus stands amongst other uses.
Most American manufacturers adhere to the ASTM A500 standard, while Canadian manufacturers follow both ASTM A500 and CSA G40.21. European hollow sections are generally in accordance with the EN 10210 standard and Indian HSS are generally in accordance with the IS:4923
For other steel section please refer my earlier post steel-sections. Unit Weight & Properties of Hollow sections will discuss on my next post
